Art in Public Spaces

These innovative shelters were born from the desire to transform basic public transportation services into an artistic, inspirational experience for everyone. The project has brought national attention to our community and serves as a model for other towns seeking to integrate art in public spaces.

A Public/Private Partnership

"You Me and the Bus" is the first public/private partnership between Athens Area Arts Council, The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, The Athens Transit System and the citizens of Athens. Athens City Commissioners' allocated the money that would have built a standard green box shelter to this project and AAAC raised the additional money from generous citizens, grants and fundraisers needed for the artists design fees to create individually unique bus shelters.

Celebrate the Arts Fundraiser

To raise money, "Material World"-Art Meets the Runway!, A Celebrate the Arts presentation, will be held at the Hotel Indigo on Friday April 9th 2010. The event will begin at 7 pm with Mercury Artworks Gallery Closing, 8 pm Wearable Textile Art Show on the runway in the hotel’s lobby, followed by dancing in the Rialto Room. Come see how textiles and fabric designs have become an integral part of our everyday life in wall texture, furniture and clothing.

About You, Me and The Bus

You, Me and the Bus has funded 4 bus shelters which are installed along major transportation arteries in Athens. Shelters are site specific and transform utilitarian bus shelters into a work of art that enlivens the street scapes along some of Athens' most heavily traveled corridors and areas spurs revitalization in low-income neighborhoods. These bus stops help connect communities, encourage independence and inspire creativity while providing safe shelters.
